Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar

Shaykh Husain was born in Chicago (USA) in 1972. After completing his primary education at schools in his hometown near Chicago, he joined the University of Chicago where he studied Biology, Arabic and Islamic Civilization. It was during this period that he began his study of sacred knowledge, studying Arabic grammar (nahu), Hanafi Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh under ulama (scholars) in Chicago. In 1994 Shaykh Husain met and became the student (murid) of Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad, one of the leading shaykhs of tasawwuf, and began learning the Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi way.

After obtaining his undergraduate degree, Shaykh Husain enrolled in the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Along with his medical school, he continued to pursue the path of tasawwuf and his studies of sacred knowledge (alm al-din). In his final year he took leave from medical school to focus on his religious studies, traveling to Syria and then Pakistan, where he studied a traditional curriculum for a number of years under some of their greatest scholars. In Pakistan he completed the Alim course at Jamia Faridia in Islamabad.

Some of the books studied by Shaykh Husain, partially or completely, are as follows: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Mishkat al-Masabih of al-Tabrizi, Riyadh al-Saliheen of al-Nawawi, Sharh Nukhbat-al-Fikr of al-Asqalani, Tadrib al-Rawi of al-Suyuti, Tafsir al-Jalalayn of al-Suyuti and al-Mahalli, al-Hidaya of al-Marghinani, Usul of al-Shashi, Sharh Uqud Rasm-al-Mufti, Mulla Jami's commentary Sharh al-Jami on the Kafiyya of Ibn Hajib, al-Taftazani's commentary Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani on the Talkhis al-Miftah of al-Qazwini, and the Sharh al-Tehzib of al-Taftazani.

Throughout his years of study, Shaykh Husain continued his training on the spiritual path under the tutelage of Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad. He was blessed with the close company of his Shaykh, learning the science of purification of the heart via silent dhirk and reflection (muraqabah). The deep taqwa and firm adherence to the Sunnah and Shariah that characterized his teacher were transferred to his student, and Shaykh Husain was formally authorized in New York in July 2001, receiving ijazah to guide others in the Naqshbandi way.

Upon returning to the United States, Shaykh Husain completed medical school, receiving his Medical Degree, and is currently working as a doctor in the University of Chicago hospitals. Founder of a small madrasa named Jamia Bukhari, he teaches classes on tafsir, hadith, fiqh, and Arabic and conducts a daily dhirk (muraqabah) after fajr prayer. Shaykh Husain also delivers the Friday Khutbah in the Islamic Center of Chicago and has traveled to different states across America teaching accelerated courses on fiqh and speaking on tasawwuf, striving to draw others closer to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala).

Shaykh Husain is presently engaged in editing and publishing the translations of Shaykh Zulfiqar's books into English. In addition, he is completing his own written works in English on the Fundamentals of Arabic verbs, as well as compiling a manual on Hanafi fiqh.
