The Book of Taharah - The Classifications of Ghusl

Translation
Ghusl is of three types:

1) fard
2) wajib
3) nafil (superogatory)

It is fard after the exiting of semen from the private part in a state of desire, for example after wet dreams and intercourse (whether it be anal or vaginal) and after completion of the menstrual cycle and completion of postpartum bleeding.

It is wajib for a person in a state of major ritual impurity before converting to Islam.

It is praiseworthy:

1) before the Friday prayer
2) on both days of Eid
3) before wearing the sacred cloth of Hajj
4) at the plain of Arafah
5) before entering Mecca or Medina
6) before visiting the grave of the Prophet

Ghusl is not required:

1) with the excretion of madi or wadi
2) with wetdreams without moisture (even for a woman)
3) after entering a finger or foreign object into a womans private part
4) after bestiality without ejaculation
